The Sunderland fan is one of a number of students enjoying considerable success after teaming up with the Darlington College and a unique initiative being offered by Darlington Football Club manager Martin Gray and his specialised football academy.

Renowned for his work output and strength in midfield, he said: “For me it is about grafting and never giving up and I love tackling.”

He divides his time studying in the classroom, training and playing matches and has played his debut match for Darlington, securing a contract to play and be a coach for the Martin Gray Football Academy. He is also studying for a coaching qualification.

As well as action on the pitch, he will help Martin and his team deliver the football programme to students at Darlington College and other young players around the region.

Martin said: “Dave has the right attitude to his studies, the game and is a great role model for young people.”
