Can you tell us about how you came to be part of the MGFA team?
It all started in 2017 when I left secondary school and joined the Martin Gray Football Academy in partnership with Darlington College, where I enrolled onto the Level 3 diploma in Sports/Sports coaching with Darlington college which I did for two years.
Over the two years of doing the course I had to participate in work experience, which I did with Martin. This involved me going into schools across the Northeast to help deliver coaching sessions and deliver PE Lessons with other MGFA coaches. After finishing my two years on the course and my work experience hours, Martin observed and watched me deliver more sessions, before offering me a full-time contract with the business which I am forever grateful and thankful for.
What did you enjoy most about the College Course?
The main thing I enjoyed about the college course, was that there were different parts to it such as the academic work, football and work experience. I met loads of new friends whilst participating on the course. I played on Team 1 which was good for me, as we played and trained each week at a good standard which helped me improve.
I really enjoyed the fact that my weeks at college were split into two parts, where we trained 3 times a week on the morning then we went to do our academic work on the afternoon and all day on a Wednesday was our matchday.
How did it prepare you for work in the sector?
The College course gave me a taster for coaching. When I did my work experience hours through Martin Gray, I was going into schools teaching PE Lessons, coaching after school clubs and on holiday courses through MGFA, which give me an insight as to what it was all about. From that point on i knew i wanted to work as a coach and work with children throughout the primary and secondary school sector, to try and help improve and progress them to become better at football or in sports.
What do you enjoy most about being an MGFA Coach
The best thing about being an MGFA Coach is seeing the children across the Northeast enjoy playing the sport, make new friends and have lots of fun whilst they are learning and improving on their skills and knowledge of the game.
I enjoy being able to help and support the boys and girls and help give them the best possible chance in football and in life.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Hobbies, interests?
I love spending time with my family and friends, playing and coaching football, walking my dogs, listening to music and watching movies. I am also an assistant manager at a grassroots football team (Darlington 21st Allstars JFC) where we are playing in division1 this season.
