Meet the Coach Martin Edwards

Can you tell us about how you came to be part of the MGFA team?

I became part of Martin’s coaching staff in 2019. I had just relocated to Darlington from London and was establishing my goalkeeping academy up in the Northeast. I saw online that Martin had a fantastic football Academy program in place and was keen to be a part of it.

I contacted him, but they already had a goalkeeping coach. When that changed, he invited me to come have a look around and for a chat to see what they were all about. I was then even more eager to jump on board and get involved.

Can you tell us a bit more about your career journey and experiences so far?

I had to retire from playing at the age of 27, due to a back injury and that’s when I began my coaching journey. I quickly progressed through the coaching education system and obtained all my goalkeeping awards up to level 3 Goalkeeping licence.

Over the last 20 years I have worked at QPR FC, Fulham FC, Tottenham FC, Crystal Palace FC, Middlesbrough FC, in communities, development centres, Academies, and, with scholars and young Professionals. I also spent a year coaching goalkeeper in the USA.

During this time, I set up my own goalkeeping Academy MEGA. Through this I have developed many goalkeepers to a very high standard that have gone on to sign for pro clubs and even represent their country.

What do you enjoy most about being an MGFA Coach?

I’m loving my time at MGFA. All the goalkeepers I have met have been a pleasure to work with. They have always been very enthusiastic, respectful and have a great work ethic. The whole set up is very professional.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Hobbies, interests?

For the small amount of time that I’m not coaching, I have a five year old daughter who takes up most of my time. Other than that, I’m a big MMA fan so I never a miss a UFC or Bellator event. I also love to play tennis when I can find a suitable partner! Oh, and I love cooking!

What team do you support?

I’m a Boro fan!

Favourite food?

My favourite food, … most food. Thai, Indian and Italian if I had to narrow it down…and obviously fish and chips, but not too often!
